August 6th, 2018 – The Charles De Gaulle

Always closer to our customers

On June 13th, 2018, POK® was invited by the French Navy on board the Charles de Gaulle aircraft carrier vessel to visit and appreciate the various firefighting and other protection installations.

The Charles de Gaulle is an aircraft carrier vessel of the French Navy and is its major vessel and centrepiece. It is an aircraft carrier vessel of medium size, smaller than those of the US Navy, a little bigger than the Italian Cavour but twice as big as the aircraft carriers vessel in service in the British, Spanish and Indian navies. It is 261.5 metres long, 64.36 metres wide and 75 metres high, equivalent to a 25-storey building. With a displacement of 42,500 tons, it can embark approximately 1,950 sailors on board, with an additional 800 soldiers in troop transport.

According to the engineers, the very compartmentalized design of the hull of the Charles de Gaulle and that of its advanced security systems (firefighting in particular), making it a building able to continue the combat after having received several torpedoes and missiles.

It is the first and only nuclear-powered surface combat vessel built in Western Europe. In 2018, France is the only country outside the United States to have completed the construction of a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier vessel.

In February 2017, it entered dry dock in Toulon to undergo an upgrading project which is scheduled to last eighteen months. It was on this occasion that Stéphane Liard, France Sales Director, and Pascal Cambournac, Export Sales Director, had the pleasure to visit this structure. It was a very enriching experience for the POK teams to be able to visit this impressive war building and thus understand the sailors’ expectations in terms of firefighting.
